First Steps

James is a multidisciplinary artist and designer whose work explores personal expression, memory, and visual storytelling through photography, digital media, and graphic design. From an early age, they developed a strong connection to art as a means of understanding experience and communicating perspective, using creative processes to translate subtle emotional and cultural moments into visual form.

They earned an Associate’s degree in Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design from Cape Cod Community College in 2019 before continuing their studies at UMass Dartmouth, expanding their approach to design, composition, and visual communication. Alongside their academic experience, James developed a deep understanding of artistic presentation through professional framing work.

While working, James contributed to the local arts community by designing promotional materials: Flyers, posters, postcards, and social media campaigns for gallery exhibitions featuring regional artists. During this time, they also exhibited work in group shows and presented a solo exhibition of photography and digital media.

In addition to exhibition work, James has completed a range of graphic design commissions, continuing to expand their practice across both commercial and artistic spaces. Their photography centers on the emotional weight of memory and shared human experience, guided by the belief that images help people reconnect with moments that define who they are.

“To understand why photography holds such an important place in our daily lives, even in our process of art, comes from the memories we cherish, from the moments that reflect who we are and how they help us understand feelings we cannot always name.” - James
